The Myth About Ski Sizing

For the last seven years, ever since the introduction of Shape Shape skisSkis, most people are confused about ski sizing.

Let's put this subject to rest. All ski sizing is based off one of two factors, your weight and the speeds you can ski at. Basically, the forces that you drive into the ski. Your height has very little to do with that equation. Ski sizing should be determined by what we call minimum carving lengths. That is, you should buy a ski no shorter than the minimum carving length for your weight and aggressiveness.

Now here is the tricky part. That minimum carving length changes per ski model. All mountain skis will size out longer than carving skis. Carving skis are developed to ski on groomed runs only and thus have more sidecut and can be skied shorter. Our expert staff can help you with this determination.

The next time somebody tells you that in a shape ski, you can ski 15 to 20 centimeters shorter than you are used to, or that you should size the ski head height, tell them that they are wrong. You definitely will be in a shorter ski than you skied on 10 years ago, but there is no set sizing across the board. Each ski is different. Again, it is based on the ski that you buy along with your weight and aggressiveness.

We'll end with this thought: The ski has no idea how tall you are, it only knows what force you drive into it. That is your weight and the speeds you ski. Base ski size off of those factors and you will have more fun on the slopes.

See you on the slopes!
