Boot fitting  advice from the pro staff at Laacke & Joys

If you are having trouble with your boots fitting properly, you need to evaluate some of the basics to aid in your fit.

First, the socks today are an important aspect of the boot fit. Because most of the boots today are heat activated liners, meaning they work from the heat given off from your foot to be comfortable, you need to follow a few rules. The rules are never wear two pair of socks, never wear a thick pair of socks, and never wear cotton socks. Besides making the boots uncomfortable and causing pressure spots, wearing the wrong socks will make the boots cold. You need to purchase a pair of high quality ski socks, not to thick. Companies like Smartwool, and Wigwam are currently making terrific socks for skiing. The socks should be snug and conforming to the foot. This allows for the heat from your foot to get into the liner of the boot and keep your foot warm. If the socks fit properly there shouldn't be any folds or creases at the instep which can cause pressure spots.

Second, it is very important that your foot fills the whole shell of the boot. When standing straight up in a boot, your toes should be real close or just touching the end of the boot. When you flex forward and put weight on the tongue of the boot, your toes should pull off the front. You should have your foot measured in the shell of the boot without the liner in it. The pro staff at Laacke & Joys can help you with this process. Sometimes boot fit problems are as simple as you have the wrong shell size. Too big of a boot is as bad as too small of a boot. If you buy the right size shell, it is very easy to fix any problems that might occur with some custom boot fitting.

Third, you need to buy the correct volume of shell to aid in your fit. The pro staff at Laacke & Joys has gone to great lengths to provide you with a selection of different volumes in all performance categories. This means that the boot fitters at Laacke & Joys, evaluate your foot for width, instep, arch length, and any inside or outside rolling of the foot. They will recommend a boot designed for your foot shape. Buying a shell that is designed for your foot shape will ensure a comfortable boot.
