Camping Tips

How to stay dry at the Campground.

Camping is a lot more fun when you know the secrets to staying dry and comfortable when wet weather comes your way. Here are a few quick suggestions to make your next camping trip a warm and dry one, regardless of the weather.

  1. Set up your tent on well-drained higher ground.
  2. Use a ground cloth under your tent, but make sure it doesn't stick out from below the tent anywhere.
  3. For extra protection against a wet tent floor, cut a piece of plastic larger than the floor of the tent and lay it on the inside of the tent with the plastic extending up the walls 3-4 inches.
  4. Make sure that your tent has been properly seam-sealed. The floor of the tent and the rainfly should be seam-sealed.
  5. Use a tent with a rainfly that gives maximum coverage, preferably one with a vestibule.
  6. If your tent does not have a vestibule, rig a tarp over the entrance to the tent so that you have a place to take off wet clothing and footwear before entering the tent. Wet items should remain outside the tent. If you need to bring these items into the tent, have a garbage bag or large plastic bag that they can be put into so that you keep other clothes and sleeping bags dry.
  7. Vent your tent to allow condensation to escape.
  8. Invest in good quality rain gear that will keep you dry in a heavy downpour as well as a continuous drizzle. With good rainwear, you can continue to enjoy being outdoors instead of staying cooped up in the tent.
  9. Use waterproof drybags and other waterproof containers to store any items that absolutely need to stay dry.
  10. Use accessories for your tent like gear lofts, hanging shelves, and sewn-in pockets that can help you keep clutter off the floor where it would be more likely to get wet from wet shoes or clothing.
