How to stay dry at the Campground.
Camping is a lot more fun when you know the secrets to staying dry and comfortable when wet weather comes your way. Here are a few quick suggestions to make your next camping trip a warm and dry one, regardless of the weather.
- Set up your tent on well-drained higher ground.
- Use a ground cloth under your tent, but make sure it doesn't stick out from below the tent anywhere.
- For extra protection against a wet tent floor, cut a piece of plastic larger than the floor of the tent and lay it on the inside of the tent with the plastic extending up the walls 3-4 inches.
- Make sure that your tent has been properly seam-sealed. The floor of the tent and the rainfly should be seam-sealed.
- Use a tent with a rainfly that gives maximum coverage, preferably one with a vestibule.
- If your tent does not have a vestibule, rig a tarp over the entrance to the tent so that you have a place to take off wet clothing and footwear before entering the tent. Wet items should remain outside the tent. If you need to bring these items into the tent, have a garbage bag or large plastic bag that they can be put into so that you keep other clothes and sleeping bags dry.
- Vent your tent to allow condensation to escape.
- Invest in good quality rain gear that will keep you dry in a heavy downpour as well as a continuous drizzle. With good rainwear, you can continue to enjoy being outdoors instead of staying cooped up in the tent.
- Use waterproof drybags and other waterproof containers to store any items that absolutely need to stay dry.
- Use accessories for your tent like gear lofts, hanging shelves, and sewn-in pockets that can help you keep clutter off the floor where it would be more likely to get wet from wet shoes or clothing.
